Remembering Hind Rajab – a poem by Sunny Morgan

Let us not forget Gaza!

Post by Fr David Neuhaus SJ | 17 April 2026

Hind Rajab was five-years old when she was killed by the Israeli army in Gaza on January 29, 2024. She was the last to die in a car that was fired on by soldiers as they were fleeing Gaza City. In the car were her uncle, aunt and three cousins. After the initial attack on the car, Hind and her cousin survived, calling the Palestinian Red Crescent for help. Hind’s cousin was killed and then Hind was left stranded in the vehicle, speaking on the phone. Paramedics tried to approach the car to rescue her but they were also killed.

This tragedy was made into a 2025 movie, “The Voice of Hind Rajab”. directed by Kaouther Ben Hania and starring Saja Kilani, Motaz Malhees, Amer Hlehel, and Clara Khoury. The film is a co-production between Tunisia and France. The film won many awards and was a candidate for best foreign film at the Academy Awards.

After viewing the movie, Sunny Morgan, a South African social activist, wrote the following poem.

My name is Hanood*

My name is Hanood (Hind Rajab)

Come and get me.

You come get me

Call your husband to come get me

It’s far away

It’s just eight minutes away

I know how to get to my house

Call my uncles to come get me

We are doing what we can.

Take a deep breath

Imagine you are smelling a flower

Breathe … blow like you are blowing out a candle

Come and get me

Everyone is sleeping

There’s blood on them

They are sleeping.

There’s blood on me.

I’m afraid of the dark

Come now

Hello,

Hello

Save me

Everyone is dead

They are dead

No green light,

No ambulance

Come get me

they are shooting

There is a tank

It’s next to me,

It’s in front of me

Why are they shooting

Where are you

Come get me quickly

Save me

I’m dying!

I’m dying!

It’s just eight minutes away

She was on the phone for four hours

No one came

You are my love, darling

One minute in Hind

Just 500 meters

They are almost there

Hello

Hello

Hello

Come get me

Come

Did someone come

No

Did someone see you

No

Did someone find you

No

She was killed by 355 bullets fired at the car she was in.

She died because no one came

Sunny Morgan, with Hind’s pleas ringing my ears * Hanood is a loving diminutive for Hind.
